Selecting the correct Ladder

Identifying a suitable ladder?

A ladder should conform to a British or European standard. Not all ladders require a British standard e.g. Roof Ladders. Ensure that the ladder looks sturdy, well maintained and free from defects.

Ladder Classifications

3 categories of ladder strength within the UK:

Industrial Duty (Class 1)
Designed for a Maximum Static Vertical Load 175kg (27.5 stones). This will sometimes be referred to as "safe working load".
Duty Rating 130kg

Trade Duty ( Class 2 but now known as EN131) ladders
Maximum Static Vertical Load 150kg ( 23.5 stones)

Domestic Duty (Class 3) ladders
Maximum Static Vertical Load 125kg (19.5 stones)
Duty Rating 95kg

The British Standards UK ladder classifications are :
BS 1129 - timber ladders
BS 2037 - metal ladders (Class 1 and Class 3)
BS EN131 - metal / timber ladders

BS EN131 is a European-wide standard (ladders manufactured in most of Europe will be known simply as EN131). In the UK it has replaced the old Trade Duty (Class 2) of BS 2037.

Selecting the corret ladder for your working height

The length of a ladder does not imply its usable length. For safety purposes, you should allow 1 metre of ladder length above the highest rung. You should never stand on the top three rungs of a ladder.
